Multi-hazard perceptions at Long Valley Caldera, California, USA

چکیده
Caldera systems such as Long Valley Caldera, California; Taupo, New Zealand; and Campi Flegrei, Italy, experience centuries to millennia without eruption, but have the potential for large eruptions. This raises questions about how local residents' behavioral responses these low-probability high-consequence events differ from their events, wildfires earthquakes, that higher probabilities. To examine this issue, a multi-hazard mail survey of 229 households explored perceptions of—and to—volcano, earthquake wildfire hazards in Volcanic Region. Response efficacy was only significant predictor emergency preparedness, which suggests hazard managers can increase household preparedness by emphasizing attribute protective actions. In addition response efficacy, expected personal consequences, intrusiveness, affective were all significantly related information seeking. indicates also households’ seeking appropriate actions communicating certainty severity impacts (thus increasing consequences) they communicate repeatedly intrusiveness) produce emotional involvement response).

The 1998 Earthquake Sequence South of Long Valley Caldera, California: Hints of Magmatic Involvement
A significant episode of seismic and geodetic unrest took place at Long Valley Caldera, California, beginning in the summer of 1997. Activity through late May of 1998 was concentrated in and around the south moat and the south margin of the resurgent dome. The Sierran Nevada block (SNB) region to the south/southeast remained relatively quiet until a M 5.1 event occurred there on 9 June 1998 (UT...
متن کاملA four - dimensional viscoelastic deformation model for Long Valley Caldera , California , between 1995 and 2000 Andrew
We investigate the effects of viscoelastic (VE) rheologies surrounding a vertically dipping prolate spheroid source during an active period of time-dependent deformation between 1995 and 2000 at Long Valley caldera. We model a rapid magmatic inflation episode and slip across the South Moat fault (SMF) in late 1997. We extend the spherical VE shell model of Newman et al. [Newman, A.V., Dixon, T....
متن کاملDilational processes accompanying earthquakes in the long valley caldera
Regional distance seismic moment tensor determinations and broadband waveforms of moment magnitude 4.6 to 4.9 earthquakes from a November 1997 Long Valley Caldera swarm, during an inflation episode, display evidence of anomalous seismic radiation characterized by non-double couple (NDC) moment tensors with significant volumetric components. Observed coseismic dilation suggests that hydrothermal...
متن کاملNew constraints on mechanisms of remotely triggered seismicity at Long Valley Caldera
[1] Regional-scale triggering of local earthquakes in the crust by seismic waves from distant main shocks has now been robustly documented for over a decade. Some of the most thoroughly recorded examples of repeated triggering of a single site from multiple, large earthquakes are measured in geothermal fields of the western United States like Long Valley Caldera. As one of the few natural cases...
